Sterling Heights, MI., APRIL 4, 2003 ¾ The front lines of the war are far-reaching, extending thousands of miles to the city of Sterling Heights, Michigan. Sterling Heights residents with family members in the military serving in Iraq are impacted emotionally as well as financially. Recognizing the need to support their neighbors, the Best Western Sterling Inn, in conjunction with the City of Sterling Heights and the Sterling Heights Community Foundation are launching a fundraiser, “Charity Begins at Home.” A press conference will be held on Wednesday, April 9 at 10 a.m., at the Best Western Sterling Inn.
“Charity Begins at Home” will run from April 9 to April 25, 2003. All donations for “Charity Begins at Home” will be distributed to families of reservists serving out of Selfridge Air National Guard who have been called up for active duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be accepted 24 hours a day at the front desk of the Best Western Sterling Inn, located at 34911 Van Dyke Ave. at 15 Mile Road in Sterling Heights. Check donations may be made payable to the Sterling Heights Community Foundation. Cash donations also will be accepted. All donations to “Charity Begins at Home” are tax deductible.
“The purpose of this effort is that we are looking to raise funds to alleviate hardship on the home front,” says Victor Martin, General Manager, Best Western Sterling Inn. “We hope that this fundraising event can be used as a model by other cities nationwide to help their own neighbors.” Martin, who is spearheading this fundraising initiative, will donate the first check in the amount of $1,000 to “Charity Begins at Home.”
“Charity Begins at Home” also has the full support of the City of Sterling Heights. “We are trying to do whatever we can to provide security at home for those who are providing hometown security for us,” said Richard Notte, Mayor of Sterling Heights.
